Moore Balance Brace Can Lower Your Fall Risk

Did you know this year, 1 in 4 seniors will fall? In fact, falls are the number one cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for Americans aged 65 and older. In addition to physical injuries, which may take a long time to heal, a fall can inhibit your ability to enjoy social activities, leaving you depressed, fearful, and isolated. During September, we recognize Falls Prevention Awareness Day. At Caring Podiatry, we can reduce your risk of falling and offer a powerful tool to help: the Moore Balance Brace.

No Fall Protocols

Our podiatrists, Andrew Schmierer, Craig Shapero, Mark Fillari, and Eric Peters, will evaluate key factors that may increase your chances of falling. A Comprehensive Fall Risk Protocol will look at ways to lower that risk. The Moore Balance Brace is a custom-made ankle foot orthosis often prescribed for both feet. It’s the only clinically proven brace to reduce postural sway and increase stability. The Moore Family Balance Brace has several functions:

  • Stabilizes the foot when there is weakness or fatigue in the lower extremities

  • Provides ankle support which improves balance

  • Improves foot clearance for less tripping

  • Stimulates skin receptors to provide feedback to the brain

This exceptionally lightweight brace is easy to put on and remove and is designed to fit easily into shoes. It’s also covered by most insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, as a treatment for conditions associated with fall risk factors.

More Ways to Prevent Falling

Dealing with foot and ankle pain and issues is a significant way to lower your risk of falling. You can also take other steps to keep yourself safe and independent. These include:

  • Managing other diseases and disorders that can cause a fall, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

  • Having an annual eye exam

  • Asking your primary care doctor or pharmacist to evaluate all your medications, looking for potential interactions or side effects such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or fatigue that could result in a fall.

  • Make safety modifications at home like removing throw rugs, adding no-slip strips and grab bars in the tub and shower, increasing lighting on stairs and hallways, and moving frequently used items to easily accessible lower shelves.

If you’re a senior citizen or someone who loves one and want to make an appointment for a fall risk evaluation, contact us at our Monroe Township (609-860-9111) or Neptune (732-455-8700) offices today.
