5 Signs it’s Time for New Orthotics

At Caring Podiatry our podiatrists, Andrew Schmierer, Craig Shapero, and Mark Fillari will prescribe custom orthotics to patients suffering from a condition that is the result of the abnormal motion of the foot or if there is a need to protect a vulnerable area of the foot as in the case of a diabetic ulcer. Orthotics can be an effective treatment for foot problems like plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendonitis, flat feet, and other painful podiatric conditions.

Like shoes, however, orthotics eventually wear out. Overtime the plastic of the orthotic can flatten and lose shape, the structure of your foot may over time changes, or a condition may progress to the point that new orthotics are needed. Since custom orthotics are made from an exact mold of your unique foot, if the shape or biomechanics of your foot changes your orthotic will need to change as well. So how do you know it’s time to switch up your orthotics? Below are five signs.

  1. There are visible signs of damage or wear. If the cover of the orthotic is worn or the orthotic appears cracked or broken it is most definitely time to replace your orthotic.

  2. You are in pain. New pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, or back can be a signal that your orthotics are no longer right for your feet.

  3. Orthotics have exceeded their expected lifespan. When you first get your orthotics the podiatrist will tell you how long you can expect them to last. Typically, depending on the type of orthotics prescribed for you, custom orthotics will last between 1-3 years. If you are wearing your orthotics past the recommended time you should let the podiatrist inspect them to make sure they are okay.

  4. The wear pattern is uneven. Look at the bottom of your orthotic. Is one part more worn down than the other? This shows that your foot is not staying in the proper position.

  5. Orthotic looks misshapen. Another sign that the orthotic is no longer functional is if it appears flat or it is not holding its shape.

It’s a good idea to inspect your orthotic periodically for any of the visible wear signs above. If you have concerns about your custom orthotic or are wondering if it’s time to replace them, don’t hesitate to contact our Monroe Township (609-860-9111) or our Neptune (732-455-8700) office. Keeping your feet healthy is our top priority!
