How ESWT Can Relieve Your Foot Pain

At Caring Podiatry, we know how debilitating chronic pain can be. Many podiatric conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, heel spurs, and weak ankles can be the source of ongoing pain. For our Monmouth and Middlesex County patients, there’s a treatment for pain that’s non-invasive, non-surgical, and has an effectiveness rating of 80% or higher—it’s Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy, ESWT for short.

How Does ESWT Work?

The shockwave is a high-energy, focused acoustic wave that stimulates metabolism and enhances blood circulation which speeds the healing process. Our podiatrists, Andrew Schmierer, Craig Shapero, or Mark Fillari will apply a smooth gel to the treatment area and then use an applicator moving over the affected spot in a circular motion, releasing the waves. Treatment sessions usually last 10-15 minutes and typically patients will receive 3-5 treatments spaced a week apart. Over time, damaged tissue regenerates and eventually heals.

What are the Advantages of ESWT?

There are several:

  • Non-surgical

  • Requires no anesthesia

  • No long recovery time—you can bear weight on the affected foot immediately and resume full activities within days after treatment

  • ESWT is safe, FDA approved, and used worldwide

Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects are very minimal if at all. Some patients may experience minor discomfort which can last for a few days. The experience is like the type of sensation you might experience after a full day’s work or after an intense exercise session.

Is ESWT Right for Me?

If you are currently suffering from acute or chronic musculoskeletal or other pain that significantly reduces your mobility or impairs your quality of life, and your condition has not responded to other treatment methods ESWT may be able to help. Many people experience reduced pain after only 3 treatments with some reporting immediate pain relief after a treatment; although it can take up to four weeks for pain relief to start.

The first step is to make an appointment at our Monroe Township (609-860-9111) or our Neptune (732-455-8700) office. Our podiatrists will examine your feet and review your medical history to determine if you would be a good candidate for ESWT. Don’t suffer from foot pain any longer.
